I have a well-earned reputation for raining on parades. But even I have to admit that I found myself walking with an extra bounce in my step this week. That’s because the situation in which Democrats find themselves today is vastly better and more hopeful than the one in which they were mired a mere month ago. Nothing is certain. Donald Trump remains a formidable opponent with a solid hold on the Republican electorate. But Kamala Harris has been doing a lot of things right since she took over from President Joe Biden as the presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party. According to Nate Silver, the race is now a toss up, which means the Democrats now have a fighting chance to defeat Trump. That’s something worth pausing to note—and to celebrate.
