The long paragraph you quoted was enough to make me want to buy the book. It reminds me of something my own teacher and advisor, the late Christopher Lasch could have written. I'm now older than Kit was when he passed in 1994, but I often wonder what he would have made of this world we're in, and of a president who's the poster child for the culture of narcissism. Great teachers shape the way we view the world, the lenses we choose to help perceive reality. It sounds like Lilla was that teacher for you. I look forward to reading his work.

Lovely column, Damon. This book would seem to form a nice trilogy with The Denial of Death (Becker) and The Case Against Reality (Hoffman). Indeed, we are wired for self deception.
