Stay warm! We're getting the arctic blast starting tonight and into tomorrow and the weekend...

There's a crucially important corollary to the [normal-type candidates who] "sounds like a politician," and that is "takes policy positions that are dependent on the will of the donor-lobbyist establishment."

This is most obvious with Haley, but even DeSantis [especially on foreign policy: Ukraine, Israel, China] has to take care not to offend too many bigwigs. Whereas Trump just does whatever he wants that morning, and doesn't think about who he's pissing off. Since the GOP base loathes the GOP elite, Trump's "I don't care" style is an important gut signal that they can trust him (in their minds).

True that and that is in turn a result of the fact that Trump is the only candidate who doesn't need the usual GOP donors to fund his campaign.

No need to apologize about writing in difficult circumstances. I lost power for five days during hurricane Sandy. I look forward to your post after the Iowa caucuses.

I purchased a used pickup which I presume is a Hurricane Sandy expatriate. Removing the bed liner revealed dried mud and pine needles. The truck had been repainted so it looked new but the aluminum engine block was corroded and there was rust on some of the interior seat supports. Did Hurricane Sandy drown a lot of cars?

I saw cars and trucks floating and moving down hill in lower Manhattan. This was when the storm started. I was working in the yard that flooded at the time. I was rescued by a heavier truck that managed to stay on the road.

Is there really anybody left on the planet who doesn't understand that authenticity is the key source of Trump's appeal?

For one thing, he is the only candidate, in either party, who can crack an authentic joke. Last night's town-hall response to "would you be open to mending fences with those who've run against you" was “Oh sure I will, I will. I’ve already started to like Christie better,” which is genuinely funny! Of course, over at the Bulwark, they're all outraged that anyone laughed.

As for this 68-yr-old lifelong Democrat (at age five I had a Kennedy-Johnson bumper sticker on my toy car), I'll be voting a straight Republican ticket, including for Trump. This is because the Democrats are all-in on mutilating gay and autistic kids, and allowing men into any women's space place event competition whatevs (as long as said man thinks to himself the magic words "I'm trans" before so entering).

Yes, I'm down with the fascist sociopath. At least there will be some good jokes.

And fewer mutilated kids.

I'm not after fame, or fortune. I'm anonymous and my substack is free. I'm out to stop the mutilation and sterilization of children that the Democrats fully support. If the Democrats can turn away from that, I will support them again.

>In The Reckoning, Kara Dansky, a radical feminist and lifelong Democrat, exposes the invasion by men into female-only spaces, the harming of children, and the silencing, punishment, cancellation and even violence against women who speak out. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party, which claims to represent the interests of women, ignores the problem, while its allies in the organized Left and mainstream media paint all opposition to the “trans” agenda as “right wing.” But radical feminists are not “right wing.” They are leftists who know that sex is real and are not afraid to demand women’s hard-won rights to safe spaces and privacy.

My increasingly favorite trope is the “lifelong Democrat who is now voting Republican over some marginal issue which mainline Dems barely think about.” Thankfully these misguided folks are counter-balanced by

Center Right suburbanites with a college education and a sense of perspective who would normally vote Republican but understand that the threat of authoritarianism far outweighs that of puberty blockers at this moment (or any).

You mansplained that this is a "marginal issue" oh so well.

As for the "threat of authoritarianism", blue state after blue state is passing new laws allowing the State to take kids away from parents who won't consent to "gender affirming care" for their kids. In California, SB107 made denial by parents of "gender affirming care" as the legal equivalent of child abuse by parents. This law was passed with 100% support from Democrats. I can't think of anything more "authoritarian" than that.

The incidence of gender dysphoria makes it, by definition, a marginal issue for most Americans. As the parent of a gender-fluid child I also know that the concern for most parents of trans children is the type of law being passed in my state (Ohio)*, which attempts to ban all gender-affirming care for teens. I take your concerns of authoritarianism around this issue with extreme skepticism, and disallowing patents from seeking the medical care their children need will have a far greater impact than intervening on behalf of the minority of trans children whose parents are unsupportive.

*The Ohio bill was so absurd in its overreach that Governor DeWine — about as staunch a Republican as you’ll find — vetoed because of how many stories he had heard from parents saying that gender-affirming care had saved their children’s lives. Naturally the statehouse is getting ready to override his veto.

So no, I don’t credit your concerns with authoritarianism here, as the threat to my family and the families we know is coming from the Right.

The Ohio law, as I'm sure you know, banned only off-label sterilizing drugs and surgeries, not psychological and psychiatric care. The evidence that pediatric sex-trait modification drugs and surgeries enhance long-term outcomes is lacking, as multiple European countries (with not-for-profit health care systems) have concluded, leading to sharp restrictions on pediatric sex-trait modification by drugs and/or surgeries in those countries.

For the benefit of your child, I urge you to explore the medical situation closely. Here are some places to start:

Ain't it great to have electricity? What would we do without it? No doubt there are malign actors plotting such a future for us right now. I am glad that you and your family are warm.

What if the “civil” war wasn’t the real name of that war?

What if Americans since 1865, had continued to use the real name, the name President Lincoln, Congress and General Ulysses S. Grant used, the historical name of that war:

“War of Rebellion”?

Who benefited from changing “War of Rebellion” to “Civil War”?

Is something hidden by the name change? Was “Slavery” hidden ?

In listing folks enjoying Christie’s honesty, you forget Centrist Independents whose politics are based mostly on negative partisanship toward the GOP.

Trump’s success with his base has always reminded me of the old Rob Riggle joke after Palin’s unveiling as McCain’s running mate: “I want a leader I can relate to, who’s like me…or worse!”
