Based on the last paragraph, it appears that Trump, and the Republican party could be labeled fascist. Fox News, Proud Boys, etc. Certainly are a propaganda machine and militia respectively. I look forward to your next installment on this.
One suggested correction. While some of the most important Communist states took power as you stated in a revolution (USSR, Cuba, China) many others were installed by an outside power in an invasion (Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, East Germany, Hungry).
Thanks for answering my question, very much looking forward to Part 2. I suspect the answer to the Trump question is going to be something along the lines of "Not quite fascist" based on a lack of coherent ideology, but he definitely embodies some elements of authoritarianism.
I asked: "What is the experience of fascism from the point of view of the followers?" Leaders come and go, but the followership seems to always discover the same playbook. Uniforms, armbands, slogans, scapegoating and genocide. Arndt et al wanted to attribute it to psychology, but I always find that unsatisfying, as one personality type is never enough population percentage to make a whole civilization.
As I dip into various fields, the consitent element seems to be loyalty. Loyalty to Rome, loyalty to the Third Reich, loyalty to the mafia, loyalty to Trump. Should we be looking at this as something in the heirachy of needs?
