Thanks for the Aimee Mann post. Big fan of the underrated “I’m With Stupid” CD, with one catchy song after another.

What a lovely piece, Damon. A welcome break from the depressing world of politics. Although I've heard of Mann, I'm not familiar with her work. But I have my own set up musicians who've formed the soundtrack to my life, so I get the feeling.

Wonderful post. Years ago I had to take "Save Me" off of the playlist I used for taking walks because it was awkward to tear up in front of strangers on the sidewalk.

Thanks for the recommendation. I can't wait to do a deep dive into her catalogue. I've always enjoyed her music on the radio but I've never listened to an album.

Read this first thing this morning, Damon, but only have the time to comment now. A wonderful tribute to a wonderful artist whose work you make me want to know much better. Also, an opportunity for me to share my most embarrassing (which implicitly acknowledges the unfortunate truth that there are others nearly, just not quite, as embarrassing) misheard lyrics story of my 1980s youth: I thought Aimee Mann in "Voices Carry" was singing, in that concluding line of the chorus which you quote, "Let's go downtown / it's so scary." A ridiculous mishearing, but it stuck with me for years, probably until college. (In my defense, we didn't have MTV, only Friday Night Videos on NBC, so I may not have actually seen the video until 1988 or so.)

Back in the pre-Pitchfork, pre-woke days, the Village Voice critics poll was a great way of finding good music. Bachelor No. 2 came in at #11 in 2000.

"Very smart songwriter" is a great niche to occupy. And she made a great nihilist in THE BIG LEBOWSKI

Aimee Mann has indeed been wonderful since "Voices Carry", which completely blew me away in high school. She's maintained quality, and integrity, and honesty. As far as I'm concerned, that means whatever this game is, she wins.

Really nice to read a fellow fan. With ya 100%, Damon.
